Ben Pieper is a photographer located in Kansas City, Missouri. He got his start in professional photography shooting for Hallmark, and now runs his own photography studio. His web site, powered by SlideShowPro for Flash and ThumbGrid, offers a full-browser presentation of his portfolio, including many wonderful shots of products and food (speaking of food, check out the Motion section for a fun video). As for presentation, the SlideShowPro player’s interface is turned off and scaled 100%. Alongside it on the right is ThumbGrid, presented in a dock-like fashion. Ben also layered barely-there arrows on top of content to travel backwards and forwards. In all, a really great presentation. Congrats to Ben for a job well done!

The usage is simple, elegant, and incredibly easy to navigate. The gallery is loaded up with “fill” style album preview graphics (that have been customized with rounded corners), plus an external navigation consisting of a pair of forward/backward buttons and a gallery button that appears only when necessary. Iowa-based graphic design and communication studio Measure is using SlideShowPro for Flash and SlideShowPro Director to present their portfolio of print, editorial, and interactive work online. Underscored with an eye-opening background color animation, SlideShowPro for Flash is floated in the center of the site with a transparent background, a customized gallery icon, and a gallery that uses “Fill” style album previews. Measure has also augmented SlideShowPro for Flash with a caption element pinned to the right-side of the window that dynamically updates with textual content using SlideShowPro’s events. Last but certainly not least, Measure is also using PHP to access SlideShowPro Director’s API on a mobile page that includes selected works.

SITE OF THE MONTH:

Gabriel Jeffrey
http://gabrieljeffrey.com/

The online photography portfolio of Gabriel Jeffrey is an exercise in both simplicity and visual impact. The site uses SlideShowPro Director (for content management and publishing) and SlideShowPro for Flash, which has nearly every inline interface item turned off. The component is scaled to the dimensions of the SWF — allowing photos to be displayed full-frame in the browser window at any screen resolution. The site contains a simple navigation positioned at the top left, plus large forward / backward graphics layered on top of the component for lateral browsing through an album. Last but certainly not least, there’s also a collection of beautifully-shot videos in the “Moving Images” section that uses SlideShowPro’s media player interface.

SITE OF THE MONTH:

Joel Cudmore
http://www.joelcudmore.com/

Joel Cudmore’s photography portfolio site is superbly executed from top to bottom. The layout is easy on the eyes, minimal, and serves as the perfect backdrop for his collection of still-life, architectural, and creative photography. Joel uses SlideShowPro for Flash, SlideShowPro ThumbGrid, and SlideShowPro Director as his content publishing / management source. The home page is especially unique, for Joel is using SlideShowPro Director’s new Smart Album functionality to populate the display with content tagged “home-page,” giving him freedom to dynamically change content anytime. Not only that, but he’s using ThumbGrid as the interface (with SlideShowPro unseen off the stage), with some custom ActionScript that detects thumb clicks, reads the album/content ID from the chosen content, then redirects the browser using a SlideShowPro permalink. Clever, and beautiful. Great work Joel!

SITE OF THE MONTH:

Imago

Imago

This month’s top example is Imago, a photography and multimedia design group in Olpe, Germany. SlideShowPro for Flash is used in every section of the site to display photographer profile photos, their company portfolio, behind-the-scenes photos, and interior shots of their studio. All of SlideShowPro for Flash’s internal elements are turned off (the navigation, captions, etc) and the component is adorned with simple previous / next buttons; plus an image counter. All together, it’s a very clean, simple, easy to navigate site with great photography.

SITE OF THE MONTH:

Cooperative Studios
http://www.cooperativestudios.com/

Cooperative Studios

Cooperative Studios is a French multimedia company that specializes in providing surf and beach culture video content to news media and corporate clientele. Their web site, cooperativestudios.com, was developed by Will Hindson and uses SlideShowPro for Flash, SlideShowPro ThumbGrid, and SlideShowPro Director to present their portfolio of videos, plus photography. Interestingly, ThumbGrid (overlaid with a cool weathered frame) is used as an introductory navigational element in their “Footage” and “Portfolio” sections to dictate which video SlideShowPro for Flash should start with. Content captions are displayed outside of the component using ThumbGrid’s rollover events. After selection, ThumbGrid moves out of view, and SlideShowPro for Flash appears. The component is augmented with lateral navigation links, as well as a close button to move back. According to the developer, the protected area of their site (where clients download assets) also uses SlideShowPro Director to offer download links to the original, high-resolution video files. In summary, it’s a cool, creative, easily updatable web presence that is our pick for June “Site of the Month.”

From those submissions we pick the ten most creative, beautiful, and/or unique examples and include them in our monthly newsletter. SITE OF THE MONTH:

Gene Smirnov
http://www.genesmirnov.com/

Gene Smirnov Screenshot

Gene Smirnov’s web site is the total package. Rich typography, a simple layout, and a portfolio of work that’s overflowing with amazing photography. Smirnov is based in Philadelphia, and has shot photos for many music publications (Spin, Rolling Stone, URB, etc), record labels, and other corporate clients. Much of that work is presented using SlideShowPro for Flash for viewing and navigating between content, as well as SlideShowPro ThumbGrid which is layered (invisibly) above and accessed by clicking the center of each photo. Smirnov is also using the “Line” Preloader Appearance, which is positioned at the bottom of the content area, and a “Push” Transition Style that uses a very low setting for Transition Length; allowing content to quickly “pop” into view. Congratulations to Smirnov for a job well done.
