Cross domain policy file maker

Over the years, the SlideShowPro player has introduced many users to the Flash Player’s cross domain security wall. This firewall pops up whenever a SWF embedded at one domain attempts to load data (XML, RSS, etc) from a separate domain. Without a proper crossdomain.xml file at the separate domain, the Flash Player quietly shuts down the request (and thus prevents a slideshow from appearing).

To avoid common formatting errors when creating these crossdomain.xml files, we’ve built a handy Cross Domain Policy File Maker app. Simply type in the domains you need, download the file, then upload it to the root of the domain where data is served from.

This app is bare-bones by design, and doesn’t cover the complete range of options found in the cross domain policy file specification. Only the very slimmest percentage of people ever need something more than what this app provides, so we purposely kept it basic and user friendly. We hope it makes formatting these documents easier and error-free.

Free Flash Panel Extension: Publish Assistant

Posted by Todd Dominey on Saturday, August 8, 2009 at 2:13 pm

PanelIf you’ve worked with Flash long enough, chances are you’ve built projects that consist of multiple SWF files that all interoperate in some fashion. Publishing each requisite SWF can be laborious; especially when you’re developing and debugging a project and the last thing you need is to be slowed down by the Flash IDE.

To speed things up, I developed a “Publish Assistant” panel for Flash. What does it do? It contains two simple buttons: “Publish All”, which rips through every FLA currently open in Flash and publishes it (using the Publish Settings currently assigned to each FLA), and “Publish All, Test Active”, which is the same as “Publish All” except the currently active FLA is published using “Test Movie.” This latter button is most useful in projects where child SWFs need to be published (the “inactive” FLAs) and you want to test the parent SWF in the Flash Player.

The panel is free, and has been tested in Flash CS3 and Flash CS4. Please report any issues or feedback if you like!
